This guide includes the following sections:
Lambda-cyhalothrin* is a restricted-use synthetic pyrethroid insecticide that controls a broad spectrum of insects in row and specialty crops. The active ingredient is also used in other formulations to control insects in and around residential and commercial buildings, livestock houses, greenhouse production, and rights-of-way management.
Lambda-cyhalothrin was first registered for use in the United States in 1988. Insecticides that contain lambda-cyhalothrin as an active ingredient include Warrior II with Zeon Technology®*, Silencer®*, and Crusader® 1EC*.
Lambda-cyhalothrin is a broad-spectrum insecticide that controls and suppresses many types of insects, including the following in various crops (not an all-inclusive list):
Crop | Pests Controlled | Pests Suppressed |
Corn | Earworms, European corn borers, cutworms, armyworms, corn rootworm beetles and larvae
Soybeans | Aphids, bean leaf beetles, thrips, Japanese beetles
Cotton | Thrips, cotton leafworm, cotton leafhopper, cabbage looper, boll weevil, stink bugs
Alfalfa | Leafhoppers, looper species, alfalfa weevil, beetles, aphids, armyworms
Canola | Cabbage seedpod weevil, diamondback moth, grasshoppers, lygus bugs, cabbage aphids | not applicable |
Wheat | Aphids, beetles, grasshoppers, armyworms, grass sawfly, Hessian fly
Peanuts | Tobacco thrips, threecornered alfalfa hopper, green cloverworm, cutworms, vegetable weevil, stink bugs |
Lambda-cyhalothrin is a Group 3 sodium channel modulator mode-of-action insecticide in the synthetic pyrethroid chemical family, which includes many active ingredients like bifenthrin*, permethrin, and esfenvalerate*. It disrupts the normal function of the insect’s nervous system by allowing sodium ions to flood into cells, causing abnormal nerve impulses that result in paralysis and death.

Lambda-cyhalothrin is a contact insecticide that requires physical exposure or ingestion for effective insect control. It generally works quickly upon exposure, although the insect’s growth stage and environmental conditions can affect the insecticide’s toxicity level. The addition of an adjuvant can help insecticides work more efficiently.
Lambda-cyhalothrin is registered for use on many crops, so application rates will vary depending on the target insect and crop. It can be applied via ground or aerial equipment as a foliar spray by a certified pesticide applicator. It may also be soil-applied to control underground pests, such as cutworms and corn rootworm larvae.
Below are typical Willowood Lamba-Cy 1EC* use rates in various cropping systems. Consult the product label for more specific application guidelines.
Crop | Rate Range (Fl. Oz/Acre) | Maximum Use Rate1 (Pts/Acre/Year) | Application Timing |
Alfalfa | 1.92–3.84 | 0.96 | Timing and frequency of applications should be based on insect populations reaching locally determined economic thresholds. |
Corn (foliar) | 1.92–3.84 | 0.96 (Includes at-plant and foliar applications | Apply as required by scouting or locally prescribed corn growth stages, usually at intervals of 7 or more days. |
Wheat | 1.92–3.84 | 0.48 | Apply as required by scouting, usually at intervals of 5 or more days. For some pests, applications should be made before insects begin to roll leaves. |
Cotton | 1.92–5.12 | 1.6 | Apply as required by scouting, usually at intervals of 5-7 days. |
Soybeans
| 1.92–3.84 | 0.48 | Apply as required by scouting, usually at intervals of 5 or more days. |
Peanuts | 1.92–3.84 | 0.96 | Apply as required by scouting, usually at intervals of 7 or more days. |
Tree Nuts | 2.56–5.12 | 1.28 | Apply as required by scouting, usually at intervals of 5 or more days. |
1 Lambda-cyhalothrin application rates will vary depending on the following:
Product applied
Insect growth stage
Crop
Targeted insect species
Insect pressure
Environmental conditions
Lambda-cyhalothrin can be tank-mixed with most crop protection products and fertilizers, including herbicides, other insecticides, fungicides, and micronutrients. Often, insecticides are applied with fungicide applications, but application timing should be determined according to the economic threshold for treatment. Waiting to apply insecticides with other crop protection applications may not always be the most cost-effective strategy.
Adding effective adjuvants, such as Farmers First™ IN-Zorb ADV™ and FieldGrip™ DRA can improve spray coverage and reduce insecticide application drift potential, maximizing the ROI of your investment. Tank-mixing a late-season fertilizer, such as Nourish Vitals™, with a lambda-cyhalothrin application can be an efficient way to boost plant health while managing insect pests.
The pesticide applicator is accountable for ensuring all products are registered for the intended use. Follow the relevant directions, restrictions, and limitations for usage on all product labels involved in tank mixing.
Overusing any single insecticide mode of action can increase the risk of developing resistant insect populations. Follow these best practices to steward insecticide active ingredients and delay the development of resistant insect populations.
Make timely insecticide applications according to label guidelines
Rotate insecticide modes of action within the same crop cycle or year after year
Adopt an integrated pest management program
Add effective labeled adjuvants to improve spray performance and insect contact
Scout fields after applications to verify insect kill
Use appropriate insect refuges based on the seed you are planting

Lambda-Cyhalothrin is a restricted-use pesticide and should only be handled by certified pesticide applicators. To ensure the safe use of lambda-cyhalothrin follow all label instructions, including these safety guidelines:
Do not enter treated areas during the restricted entry interval (REI), which is 24 hours for most registered lambda-cyhalothrin products.
When handling lambda-cyhalothrin, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including a long-sleeved shirt, pants, chemical-resistant gloves and footwear, socks, and protective eyewear.
Wash your hands after handling the herbicide and remove clothing and PPE immediately if the product gets on them.
Follow all label instructions to ensure the safe use of lambda-cyhalothrin.
Lambda-cyhalothrin has low water solubility and high-soil binding characteristics, limiting its potential for groundwater contamination. However, lambda-cyhalothrin does pose toxicity risks to non-target pests, including beneficial insects. Follow environmental safety guidelines to protect sensitive species from exposure:
Apply insecticides only when warranted by economic thresholds.
Protect non-target species by following label directions intended to minimize spray drift.
Take care when disposing of residual insecticide from empty jugs and wastewater.
