This guide includes the following sections:
Acetochlor is a selective pre-emergence residual herbicide commonly used to control grass and some small-seeded broadleaf weeds in labeled row and specialty crops.
Acetochlor was first registered for use in the United States in 1994. Products that contain acetochlor as an active ingredient include the herbicides Harness®, Arrest Plus, Keystone®, SureStart®, Surpass®, Volley® ATZ LITE NXT*, and Warrant®.
Acetochlor is a Group 15 site-of-action herbicide — very long-chain fatty acid synthesis inhibitor — in the chloroacetanilide chemical family, which also includes s-metolachlor and ethofumesate*. It works by inhibiting the growth of weed seedling shoots and is most effective when applied before weeds germinate. Some herbicides that contain acetochlor may provide up to 30 days of residual weed control.
Group 15 and Group 29 herbicides are collectively called seedling growth root inhibitors and include active ingredients like thiobencarb and pyroxasulfone.
Acetochlor is a systemic herbicide absorbed through the shoots and roots of germinating weeds and then translocated to the foliage. Generally, systemic herbicides work more slowly than contact herbicides like glyphosate.
Weed kill timing may vary depending on environmental conditions. Typically, systemic herbicides work more effectively when growing conditions are more favorable for plant growth. Performance improves when moisture is received within seven days following application and before weed emergence.
Acetochlor is a pre-emergence herbicide typically applied just before or after planting or as a companion with a post-emergence herbicide like glyphosate to provide residual action. Typical use rates for GCS Acetochlor 7EC in conventional tillage systems are shown below.
Acetochlor application rates will vary depending on the following:
Product applied
Application timing
Soil characteristics and organic content
Crop
Targeted weed species
Weed pressure
Consult the herbicide label for specific application requirements and suitable tank mix partners.

Acetochlor can be tank mixed with other herbicide active ingredients for broad-spectrum weed control and to manage emerged weeds in postemergence applications. It is often included as an active ingredient in many premix pre-emergent herbicides.
The pesticide applicator is accountable for making certain that all products are registered for the intended use. Follow the relevant directions, restrictions, and limitations for usage on all product labels involved in tank mixing. Some common acetochlor tank-mix partners for corn applications are listed below.
For pre-emergence corn applications, GCS Acetochlor 7EC may be tank mixed with the following active ingredients (not an all-inclusive list):
For postemergence corn applications, GCS Acetochlor 7EC may be tank-mixed with the following active ingredients (not an all-inclusive list):
Acetochlor is often tank mixed with atrazine* in corn to provide an expanded weed control spectrum. Several branded and generic premix herbicides are available, including Harness® Xtra 5.6L*, Fearless® Xtra 5.6L*, and Acetochlor (3.10) + Atrazine (2.50) Value Pick*.

Acetochlor has been used heavily in situations where ALS-inhibitor herbicides are losing efficacy, increasing the herbicide’s selection pressure and risk for promoting resistant weed populations. Over the past decade, two broadleaf weed species, waterhemp and Palmer amaranth, have developed resistance to Group 15 herbicides. While only 10 weed species are currently resistant to Group 15 herbicides, growers must take steps to steward Group 15 herbicides and avoid overuse when possible.
Make timely herbicide applications when weeds are 4” or smaller
Use multiple sites and modes of action
Employ crop rotation to diversify herbicides
Use full herbicide rates and layered residuals to extend the window of weed control
Add effective adjuvants to improve spray performance and plant uptake
Scout fields after applications to verify the application was effective
Add cultural or mechanical weed control practices, including tillage where appropriate

Ensure the safe use of acetochlor by following all label instructions, including these safety guidelines:
Do not enter treated areas during the restricted entry interval (REI). The REI for most registered acetochlor products is 12 hours.
When handling acetochlor, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including a long-sleeved shirt, pants, chemical-resistant gloves, chemical-resistant shoes, socks, chemical-resistant headgear for overhead exposure, protective eyewear, and chemical-resistant apron for mixing and loading.
Wash your hands after handling the herbicide and remove clothing and PPE immediately if the product gets on them.
Follow all label instructions to ensure the safe use of acetochlor.
Acetochlor may pose a risk for surface and groundwater contamination; therefore, it’s important to follow all labeled guidelines regarding application near sensitive ecological areas. Environmental safety guidelines for acetochlor include:
Use a level, well-maintained vegetative buffer strip between areas to which this product is applied and surface water features such as ponds, streams, and springs to reduce the potential loading of acetochlor from runoff water and sediment.
Avoid applications when rainfall or irrigation is expected to occur within 48 hours to reduce runoff potential.
Protect the forage and habitat of non-target organisms by following label directions intended to minimize spray drift.
Acetochlor is an effective pre-emergent herbicide that can also be applied with many postemergence products for added residual weed control. Paired with a contact herbicide like glyphosate, it provides exceptional grass and broadleaf weed control of emerged and non-emerged weeds.
