Calmer chopping rolls compared to chopping corn head

Question

We are considering trading our chopping Drago for a non chopping head installing Calmer upgrade. Tired of poor chopping last half of season with Drago. New knives don’t make a difference. Dependability should increase with non chopping head .

What about the 360 chain rolls instead of calmer? Haven’t heard anybody compare the two.

From what I have heard the 360 rolls are longer lasting then Calmer and do a better job.

We like the Calmers.  Don’t chop like a Deere chopping head but way better that Deere knife rolls.  A good compromise for the cost.  We also run 360 rolls on our other head.  Also do a nice job of chopping trash.  For us just a question of which will wear longer.

We had a head needing replacement knife rolls. Went with Calmers as the price difference was insignificant. Do a nice job chopping up material, much better than OEM deere. Time will tell on durability I guess

have had the calmer rolls on a JD hd for 5 yrs.  works great less material going thru combine.  easier to put on fall nh3 and chisel.  gives combine more power.

Run two 12 row 612 Deeres. We like the calmers. On our second set now. Got 4 years 2000 acres/yr on first set. Maybe could've ran 5th but we strip till and its worth having sized up reside. Demoed chainrolls. Worked ok just didn't chop it like we like on calmers. But that's just our opinion. Good luck!

Have you ever thought about a rolling basket with notched blades on it? I have been using this the last 5 years and it is awesome on stalks!

I had a six row Deere head with Calmer chopping rolls. Had approximately 2500 acres on them when I traded for an 8 row. They were still doing a good job. The new head had Deere straight rolls on it in good condition. They work well enough that I couldn’t see spending the money on new Calmers. I do have a Yetter Devastator for this fall. I want to hopefully save some tire damage and brake down the remaining stubble. One thing with the Calmers, on our flat land, all those little pieces float when you get a big rain.

We bought calmer knife rolls in 2014 and used them for five corn harvests and they do a great job! Installed them ourselves also. The hardest part was getting the old John Deere rolls off.

Do you need that aggressive? I used to use a geringhoff rotodisk and switched to a northstar series. Has the knife to knife rolls on it like to old 1000 series Case Ih heads. Does a nice job chopping the stalks. I no till most of my beans into it and if your gonna rip it that will go through easy.

Been running Gerringhoff NorthStar heads for 10+years.  Three years ago put Calmer BT Choppers on both 12 row heads.  Would never go back.  Wear is good and saves a sizing tillage pass in the fall.  Add Yetter Devastators and decomposition gets even better.  360 ChainRolls are a good option.  It depends on what you like 6" strands or confetti.  Both companies have made great improvements in recent years on the wear front.

Thanks for all the comments. Sounds like most agree that the Calmer rolls will cut stalks , but longevity is an issue. We had very high cost with gearbox failures in season on chopping head . We will deep till corn/corn acres and fall vertical disk or strip till corn acres heading to beans . We finished harvest at freeze up last few years . We have to process stalks at harvest.
