As the calendar turns to May it appears Mother Nature has tightened her grip on corn planting progress. After several weeks of progress tracking ahead of average, the results of our May 9 poll show a national corn planting progress of roughly 39%, dead even with the 5-year USDA average for the week. A complete map of the results is below, along with a revised map from 4/25 showing additional detail.
The most notable changes come from IN and OH where progress in the last two weeks jumped from single digits into the 30% range. Meanwhile the heavy rain and thunderstorms across portions of the southern and central Mississippi River Valley and parts of the Upper Midwest have slowed progress there.
Another interesting note is some of the correlation between the soybean progress reported last week and the lack of corn progress in some areas like Central Illinois. This has us curious, assuming conditions are right, what influences your decision on which crop goes in first? Let us know your thoughts below along with any other observations from this week.
Thanks to everyone who participated again this week. We’ll be back next week with another soybean report.
