my brother and I farm, I help during planting and harvest but the rest of the year I’m a design engineer for off farm income. That is how I’m able to buy land and expand the farm

Ssounds like winters are slower. Lots of places hiring part time help

If farming is a full time job your best bet for off farm income is to send the wife to town for a job
