Gravel vs. Crushed Concrete

Question

We struggle every spring with an extremely muddy yard. We have 10" of class 5 gravel, but every March it's a disaster. I've been thinking about investing in crushed concrete, but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra cost. Has anyone done this? And if so, do you recommend removing some/all of the old gravel first? At this point, I can't even drive my pickup across the yard without 4WD...

we used crushed several years back.  Not sure the size of crush you will find there. What we used was applied over existing gravel and gave a firm base.  Good luck

Have you thought about a couple runs of drain tile before adding to the top? 
I have the same as you do. Thinking the water table is my biggest issue.  Have tired numerous different size rock, crushed granite and some crushed concrete (maybe it wasn’t thick enough). but in the spring they all get pushed down, never to be seen again. 
A neighbor pushed all of his 'top' off and put down fabric. Pushed it back, then added new gravel to the top. Only been a couple years, I am watching to see how that goes.

Red rock works great.
3/4 with fines, it’s about the same price as gravel, doesn’t get sloppy when it rains, and lasts 5-10 years before putting another load.

I’d reccomend Scoria. It’s used on oil locations all over in western nd because of its ability to handle water on the locations.

we put down crushed concrete 1.5 - 2 inch. Waited a year and came back with finer crushed concrete.    Need to build a base first.  As far as removing some gravel it will depend on your road height.  Larger crush will raise the bed a little , more at first till it gets worked in over time

From my experience with crushed concrete, if there are a lot of fines in it, it is extremely dusty when it is dry! Packs very hard though!

You might also consider putting some drain tile through your driveway.

Remove some material and put down road fabric then replace with some new gravel.

Remove about 5-6" of material and then add geofabric/road fabric. Put your gravel back on and pack it . DO NOT use crushed concrete as you will start having tire issues!

Crushed Concrete works fine if you don't have a lot of traffic.  In high traffic areas it will deteriorate rapidly because it no longer has rebar or mesh to hold it together.  Concrete by itself is incredibly weak, the rebar is what gives it structure.  Local coop put a bunch in drive ways and within a year it was nothing but powder anywhere the trucks drove.

I suggest you pull what gravel you have back and put down large gravel down 3-4” minus then put your gravel back on top

we have used crushed concrete, it is really good.  Don’t like gravel cuz of all the clay in it that makes a mess.  Also use 1” minus washed for a nice packed base that stays clean when wet every 2-4 years add another inch of new 1” minus to freshen it up

use crushed asphalt instead they usually call them milling’s They’re a little tough to come by sometimes! and they’re definitely more $ but they  better than anything else they bind together and in the sun in the summer, they actually almost  asphalt. Give it a shot on part of it and you’ll see. The other thing with crushed concrete  it’s very dusty Millings are not. What I do where I need a bunches I will put crushed concrete and then probably  2” or 3”of milling’s over the top to keep the dust down but definitely more money!!

Concrete has a history of causing damage to tires. Better traction? Sure if you don't mind replacing all of your tires that get ripped up by it

Guy i work for buys Crushed rock holds up to 2 track machines they hardly cause a ridge when turning vs gravel. Semis seem to hold up also. Its a little rough on the hopper bottoms to haul but have hauled it with them.
