Wild Oat’s ability to blend in with wheat crops, robust growth, and potential to host diseases make it a challenging weed to manage. However, by learning to identify Wild Oat and understanding its impacts, farmers can take steps to manage this weed and safeguard their wheat crops.
USA
For managing Wild Oat in wheat, consider two products: Zidua® SC herbicide and GoldSky® herbicide.
Zidua® SC herbicide, containing Pyroxasulfone, is specifically labeled for use with wheat to control Wild Oat. It is available from FBN®. Zidua® alone may only suppress Wild Oat. Therefore, apply Zidua in conjunction with a Group 1 or Group 2 herbicide, like GoldSky®, for most effective control.
GoldSky® herbicide contains Florasulam, Pyroxsulam, and Fluroxypyr, 1-methylheptyl ester. It is also labeled for use with wheat for controlling Wild Oat and can be purchased from FBN.
Both of these products can help effectively manage Wild Oat in your wheat fields. The application rates for these products are:
Canada
In Canada, Wild Oat is becoming a challenging weed because it can cut back the yield and cause downgrading of wheat due to high dockage. Group 1 and Group 2 herbicide-resistant Wild Oat is becoming more common as a result of overusing these herbicides or cutting back the rates.
FBN offers a variety of products that may help farmers control Wild Oat in their fields throughout the year. These products are as follows:
Spring Pre-Seed Burn-Off and Post-Harvest/Fall Application
In Crop
FBN Clodinafop helps control Wild Oat in spring wheat and durum. It is tank mixable with a lot of other options for broadleaf herbicides like FBN CapTTain and FBN Sterling. It’s a Group 1 herbicide, so consider different modes of action while applying herbicides throughout the year.
Pre-Harvest
Using Smoke® 540 Glyphosate during pre-harvest will help farms lower the germination of Wild Oat in the field, reducing the population of Wild Oat for the next year. However, this option should not be used if the grower is planning on keeping the wheat seed for seeding the following year.
