Pigweed

Overview

Corn

If left unchecked, pigweed, a broadleaf weed with a global presence, can significantly undermine corn yields. Significantly affecting different parts of the corn plant, pigweed competes for light, water, and nutrients, often resulting in stunted growth and reduced yield.

In terms of physiology, pigweed can interfere with the photosynthesis process in corn. The rapid growth and dense canopy of the weed can obstruct light from reaching the corn plants, impairing their ability to produce energy through photosynthesis.

Moreover, pigweed can also affect the root system of corn. The weed's extensive root system can outcompete corn for water and nutrients in the soil, leading to nutrient deficiencies and decreased plant vigor.

Wheat

Amaranthus, commonly known as pigweed, is a resilient and rapid-growing weed wreaking havoc in wheat fields worldwide.

Pigweed often outgrows wheat for essential resources, stunting wheat growth and diminishing grain yield. Affecting various parts of the wheat plant, pigweed’s dense growth can overshadow wheat plants, hampering their photosynthesis. The weed's expansive root system can also vie with wheat roots for water and nutrients. Finally, it can change the plants' nutrient uptake, leading to nutrient deficiencies, and affect the plants' water status, resulting in water stress.

Pigweed's presence can also complicate and prolong the harvesting process. The weed's thick stems can jam machinery, leading to increased maintenance costs.

How to Identify Pigweed

Corn

Pigweed is identifiable by its vertical growth pattern, often reaching heights of 1-2 meters. Its leaves, typically oval or egg-shaped, have a long petiole and a smooth surface with a prominent central vein.

The plant's flowers are small, green, and densely clustered in a spiky arrangement at the top and along the stems. Its seeds are tiny, shiny, and either black or dark brown.

Rapid growth is a telling sign of pigweed. In optimal conditions, this weed can grow 2-3 inches per day, swiftly outcompeting corn for resources.

Another indicator is the presence of numerous seeds. A single pigweed plant can produce up to 100,000 seeds, which can stay viable in the soil for several years.

Wheat

Early identification of pigweed can empower farmers to implement necessary control measures. Here are some distinguishing features to aid in its detection:

Pigweed can tower up to 2 meters in height. Its stem is thick, hairy, and exhibits a reddish hue, while its leaves are arranged alternately, long, oval-shaped, and possess a waxy sheen.

Pigweed blooms small, greenish flowers that cluster into long spikes at the plant's apex. Its seeds are minuscule, shiny, and either black or dark brown.

Geographic Distribution of Pigweed

Corn

Pigweed is a highly adaptable weed that can flourish in various climates and soil types. It is most prevalent in the Midwest and Southern United States but can also thrive in other regions with similar conditions.

Wheat

Pigweed is a widespread weed, especially in North America, Europe, and Asia. It flourishes in disturbed soils, typical of agricultural fields.

Timing of Pigweed Emergence

Corn

This weed typically emerges in the early growing season, often before corn planting. However, it can continue germinating throughout the growing season, posing a persistent threat to corn crops.

Wheat

Pigweed sprouts in the spring and continues its growth through summer. As a warm-season annual weed, it completes its life cycle within a year and favors warm temperatures.

How to Manage Pigweed in Corn

Corn

To manage pigweed in corn, consider a layered approach with pre-emergence residual herbicides and effective post-emergence herbicides.

Pre-emergence

Post-emergence

Burndown

These rates are general guidelines. Always read and follow the specific instructions on the product labels for accurate application rates and any additional precautions.

How to Manage Pigweed in Wheat

Wheat

There are a few products that can help manage pigweed in wheat.

Post-emergence

  • Huskie®

  • Rapport Tank Mix + 2,4-D LV6 Value Pack. Do not tank mix 2,4-D with a sulfonylurea herbicide in the fall or serious crop injury could occur. Wheat should be fully tillered before applying 2, 4-D, or tillering will be inhibited, reducing wheat yield potential. MCPA herbicides like MCPE Phenoxy are preferable to 2,4-D if spraying wheat that is not well-tillered.

Burndown

Always adhere to the recommended application rates and guidelines provided on the product labels for safe and effective use.
