GCS AzoxyProp and Quilt Xcel® are both broad-spectrum fungicides with preventative and curative properties, designed to protect crops from disease and treat existing infections. Both products are essentially the same in terms of their active ingredients and ingredient ratio, each containing 13.5% azoxystrobin (1.18 lbs) and 11.7% propiconazole (1.02 lbs) per gallon, and can be applied using ground or aerial application methods. Finally, both products are labeled for use on a variety of crops, including barley, corn, rice, soybeans, wheat, and winter wheat.

So what’s the difference between GCS AzoxyProp and Quilt Xcel®?

GCS AzoxyProp is a generic alternative, while Quilt Xcel® is a branded product. With that key difference in mind, the primary differentiators between the two options are really just branding and cost, with GCS AzoxyProp typically being the more cost-effective option.

Is GCS AzoxyProp As Effective As Quilt Xcel®?

Generic fungicides can deliver similar results compared to name-brand equivalents, but with the added benefit of costing a fraction of the price. Generic alternatives contain the same active ingredients as branded products, making their fungicidal activity quite similar.

Differences in the inert ingredients or specific product formulation, specifically the inclusion or lack of surfactants and adjuvants, can sometimes affect product impact and plant uptake. That said, surfactants and adjuvants can be purchased separately and added to your crop protection strategy.

Why Does GCS AzoxyProp Typically Cost Less Than Quilt Xcel®?

There are several reasons generic fungicides like GCS AzoxyProp may be more affordable than brand-name products like Quilt Xcel®, including:

  • Different Formulation Chemistry: Some inert ingredients in a generic product like GCS AzoxyProp may differ slightly from those in a brand-name product like Quilt Xcel®. Those inert raw ingredients tend to be less expensive, lowering the production cost of the generic product.

  • Cutting Out the Middlemen: Generic fungicide producers, including FBN®, can cut out the intermediaries in the value chain, passing those savings directly on to farmers.

  • Fewer Administrative Costs: Since generic fungicide manufacturers like FBN don’t usually have rebate programs and the hefty administrative costs associated with those incentives, they can offer a lower up-front product cost and more transparent pricing to customers.

  • Lower Marketing Costs: Because Quilt Xcel® is a heavily marketed brand name in the ag market, it is charged at a brand premium so the manufacturer can recover its marketing investment costs. As a generic alternative, however, GCS AzoxyProp does not need to charge the same premiums to balance out marketing costs.

  • More Affordable Product Registration: Registering a post-patent generic fungicide like GCS AzoxyProp requires less investment since some of the original registration expense was tied to the product's initial testing and release by the branded manufacturer. During the phase when products are patent-protected, the manufacturers must recoup their original development costs and charge higher prices to repay those upfront investments.

Should Farmers Use GCS AzoxyProp or Quilt Xcel®?

While both products are effective fungicides with the same active ingredients and application methods, generic alternatives like GCS AzoxyProp can offer high-quality crop protection while reducing disease management input costs. The choice between the two will likely come down to your crop protection budget and local product availability.

As a reminder, you should always reference product labels, found here for GCS AzoxyProp and here for Quilt Xcel®, when making treatment decisions.
